Teachers assess their students almost every day. They ask questions, check assignments, give quizzes, and observe students as they participate in classroom activities. But how often do we use these moments to understand what students are really learning and what they need next?

Assessment is more than checking answers or measuring achievement. When used effectively, it helps teachers understand students’ thinking, identify learning gaps, and adjust their teaching to meet students’ needs. This is the essence of formative assessment: gathering evidence of learning throughout the lesson and using that information to guide the next steps in teaching and learning.

On 30 September 2026, William Soeryadjaya Academy (WSA), in collaboration with Infinite Potensi, conducted a workshop entitled Assessing for Learning at Grand Swiss-Belinn Darmo, Surabaya. The workshop brought educators together to explore how formative assessment can become an integral part of everyday classroom practice.

Rather than focusing solely on theories and concepts, the workshop engaged participants in hands-on and interactive activities. Teachers were invited to experience assessment from the perspective of learners, allowing them to reflect on how different assessment approaches can reveal understanding, encourage reflection, and support learning.

During the workshop, teachers explored several formative assessment strategies and considered how these assessments could be used to gather evidence of students' learning. They reflected on their existing teaching practices, discussed how assessment could be made more purposeful, and considered opportunities to apply the strategies in their own teaching practice.
